It’s an absolute pleasure to be asked to write this guest blog by the brilliant Paula, one of the region's top Wedding & Bridal Makeup Artists or MUA’s About | Paula Pace Makeup (and if you’ve ever had the pleasure of working with her, you’ll know just how incredibly talented she is). It's a wonderful opportunity to connect with a whole new crowd, and I’m sure you’re all curious about what a humanist wedding celebrant like me gets up to on the big day.

Let me take you behind the scenes with some cheeky confessions from the world of weddings.

And don’t worry - names have been changed to protect the gloriously guilty!

So, without further ado, here are my 5 Funniest Wedding Moments I’ve witnessed as a North East Wedding celebrant. Grab your popcorn!

1. The Pigeon Blessing

For the first of my 5 Funniest Wedding Celebrant Moments is Nature. Always ready to make its mark at the most opportune moments! The setting was a beautiful outdoor ceremony, a hushed gathering of friends and family in near perfect silence as the couple exchanged their vows.

And then... plop. A pigeon, clearly not a fan of the vows, decided it was the right time to relieve itself directly onto the groom’s shoulder. The bride, bless her heart, wiped it off, kissed him, and went on with her vows. Now that’s what I call true love! A hilarious moment, with a touch of “did that just happen?”

2. A Vow... and a Trip Advisor Review

For the 2nd of my 5 Funniest Wedding Celebrant Moments I sometimes, you think you’ve seen it all, and then a bride hits you with something completely unexpected. One bride read her vows in the most heartfelt, emotional way possible... and then dropped this absolute gem: “…and I give our relationship five stars on TripAdvisor. Would marry again.” Friends and family roared with laughter. It was one of those moments where you just have to step back and think, "You know what? That's actually pretty perfect." Who wouldn’t want a relationship with that kind of rating? Her vows were as modern as they come - a quick reminder that weddings are a celebration of love, with a touch of humour thrown in.

3. The Accidental Kiss

With the 3rd of my 5 funniest Wedding Celebrant Moments - I’m still blushing at this one.

So, there I was, wrapping up another fab ceremony. The couple were beaming, guests were excitedly chattering amongst themselves over drinks and canapes, and it was time to say my goodbyes. The bride, with a twinkle in her eye, leaned in to give me a little “thank you” kiss on the cheek. Being the ever obliging celebrant, I dutifully leaned in as well - and we both went for the same side. Yep, that’s right, we accidentally ‘brushed’ lips. I kid you not, it was like slow motion. The world paused. A couple of the  bridesmaids looking on gasped. And then - they erupted into cheers. The groom, being the legend he is, high fived me. I’ve got to say, it was probably the most unexpected, awkward, and hilarious moment of my time as a wedding celebrant.

4. The Vows Were Sponsored

And for number 4 of my 5 funniest Wedding Celebrant Moments there was the groom who decided to kick off his vows in a way I’ll never forget: “Before I begin, a quick shoutout to Mick’s Pork Pies for sponsoring our wedding today.” Mick was a longtime mate of the couple, and one of the bride’s first wedding gifts to her future husband was a delicious pork pie from Mick’s shop. The whole thing was so sincere, yet absolutely hilarious. It was like a wedding version of the Oscars, and honestly, I couldn’t have loved it more. After the ceremony, I was even gifted my very own Mick’s Pork Pie. I took it home and demolished it that night- it was blummin’ delicious!

5. The Gospel Choir

And finally for my 5th funniest Wedding Celebrant Moments, this one might not exactly qualify as “funny” in the traditional sense, but it was absolutely epic and definitely deserves a spot on this list.

Picture a gospel choir belting out soul stirring tunes, guests swaying to the rhythm, and then there’s me - looking a bit too keen to show off my “dance moves.”

My attempts at dad dancing in the aisles were probably more ‘oh no’ than ‘oh wow’, but you can’t help but join in when the music is so infectious. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a full-on celebration of joy. A spectacular, unforgettable moment.
